Last year's captain and No. 11 Scott Firman handed down the jersey to redshirt-junior Austin Fusco.

Long-stick midfielder Austin Fusco has received Syracuse’s historic No. 11 jersey from last year’s captain and defender Scott Firman, Firman confirmed to The Daily Orange.

The No. 11 jersey is given to the defense’s best player and leader.

“(It) wasn’t really a decision based on skill,” Firman said in a text to The Daily Orange. “I was proudest to wear #11 because of the leadership qualities that it represents … Fusc earned it and will do well with it, no doubt.”

Last season for the Orange, Fusco appeared in all 16 games and finished tied for third with 32 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. The then-redshirt sophomore picked up a goal in SU’s 10-9 win over Albany and an assist in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, an 11-10 win over Yale.

In 12 of the past 14 seasons, those then-wearing the No. 11 jersey earned USILA All-America honors. Firman was named a first-team All-American last season in his lone year as No. 11.

Syracuse will participate in an international scrimmage with the Iroquois Nationals and Team Israel the weekend of Sept. 28 to Oct. 1.
