George Morris suffered an ankle injury that required surgery, according to Syracuse Athletics.

Senior running back George Morris sustained an ankle injury in practice last Saturday that required surgery, according to an SU Athletics statement sent to The Daily Orange. Morris’ status will be determined in the following weeks.

Morris started three games last season at running back but was listed behind sophomores Dontae Strickland and Jordan Fredericks, as well as freshman Moe Neal on the post-spring depth chart. Morris practiced last week but was not present at all three practices open to the media this week.

Morris averaged 4.9 yards per carry last year, tallying 326 yards on 66 carries. His personal-best game came against then-No. 1 Clemson, when he rushed for 80 yards on 14 carries. In his SU career, Morris has rushed for 761 yards and one score.

The Orange opens up its season in two weeks on Friday, Sept. 3 against Colgate in the Carrier Dome.
